Associate Professor David Parker

A specialist in disorders and surgery of the knee joint, with particular interests in sports injuries, ligament reconstruction, realignment surgery and cartilage pathology, and knee replacement surgery. Prof Parker completed fellowships in London, Ontario, and has been in practice in Sydney since 2001, specialising exclusively in disorders of the knee joint, with Visiting Medical Officer appointments at the Royal North Shore Hospital, North Shore Private Hospital and the Mater Private Hospital. He was co-founder of the Sydney Orthopaedic Research Institute in 2002, and has a particular interest in translational research in the area of knee surgery, with more than 80 peer-reviewed publications, and over 100 invited presentations around the world . He is a clinical Associate Professor at the University of Sydney, Past President of APKASS, Board Member of ACL study group, and 2nd Vice President of ISAKOS


Peter McEwen

 In excess of 20 publications in peer-reviewed journals including in vitro, animal and clinical research platforms including an invited chapter on CAS Kinematic Alignment.
Areas of interest include Enhanced Recovery After Surgery, advanced technologies and alternative alignment in total knee arthroplasty, patient optimisation and infection prevention, knee ligament reconstruction.


Dr Samuel J MacDessi

Dr MacDessi is the Chairman of Orthopaedics at St George Private Hospital and Director of Research at Sydney Knee Specialists. Dr MacDessi specialises in knee arthroplasty and knee sports medicine surgery. He has a research interest in evolving techniques in knee arthroplasty surgery and has extensive experience in the field of cartilage restoration surgery, osteotomy and ligament reconstruction. His recent research has been on defining the relationship of alignment and soft tissue balance in total knee arthroplasty, with the aim to delivering more effective ways of restore each patient’s unique anatomy and improving outcomes.

Dr MacDessi was awarded the Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (FRACS) in Orthopaedic Surgery in 2004 and was the Knee and Hip Reconstruction Fellow at the Hospital for Special Surgery, New York in 2005-06. He has a PhD in knee surgery from the University of NSW that culminated in development of a surgically applicable classification for knee alignment phenotypes: the “Coronal Plane Alignment of the Knee” or CPAK classification. He has co-authored texts on minimally invasive knee surgery, has multiple publications in the field of knee surgery, and is a reviewer and editor for several international Orthopaedic journals. He is a member of the Australian Orthopaedic Association, the Australian Knee Society, the International Society of Arthroscopy, Knee Surgery and Sports Medicine and the Australian Society of Orthopaedic Surgeons.

An internationally respected orthopedic trauma and complex knee injury surgeon, Dr. James P.
Stannard leads the clinical, training, and research efforts for the University of Missouri’s
Department of Orthopaedic Surgery. He oversaw the opening of the Missouri Orthopaedic
Institute in May 2010, which is central Missouri’s most comprehensive orthopaedic surgery
center, as well as its latest four‐floor expansion in 2017. He serves as principal investigator on
two Department of Defense medical research grants (more than $3 million in funding) that
study biologic joint replacement strategies in knee and ankle patients. Dr. Stannard is the
immediate Past President of AONA, as well as the Chairman of the Board of Directors of AO
North America, an orthopaedic education and research foundation. Before arriving in Missouri,
he was section chief of the orthopaedic trauma service at the University of Alabama at
Birmingham (1996‐2009). He has served as editor‐in‐chief of the Journal of Knee Surgery since
2010, and the textbook he co‐edited, Surgical Treatment of Orthopaedic Trauma, published its
second edition in 2016. It is the best‐selling textbook in its field and is published in six
languages. He is the head team physician for the University of Missouri’s Athletic Department.
Dr. Stannard completed 10 years of active service with the U.S. Army, including service as a
paratrooper with the 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg in North Carolina. He received an
Army Commendation Medal twice, three Meritorious Service Medals, and Airborne wings from
four different countries (USA, Germany, Honduras, and South Africa). He was a defensive
lineman for Brown University in the early 1980s. He and Carolyn, his wife for nearly 40 years,
have seven children and seven grandchildren.
